Dr. Ralph Rothstein

Weekly Haftorah

The Haftorah {readings from the books of Nevi'im ("Prophets")} is  read  following the Torah reading on each Sabbath and on Jewish festivals and Fast days. The Haftarah is thematically linked to the Parashah or the Jewish calendar date. Tradition indicates the origin of Haftarah reading to be ancient, perhaps  in response to the persecution of the Jews under Antiochus Epiphanes  when  public Torah reading was prohibited. The class will study the Haftorah texts both as they relate to the weekly Torah reading and within the larger context of the Haftorah  within the specific text of origin in Nevi'im.
